Making It Easier to Deal with Auckland’s Food Scraps Service

In 2023, Auckland Council introduced a new food scraps collection service to help households reduce waste and support a more sustainable future. Here's how we made it easy for residents to check when their bin would arrive and what to expect.

What Changed

A new residential food scraps collection service began rolling out across Auckland.

The goal? Divert food waste from landfill and make it simpler for whānau to do their bit for the environment.

How People Could Check Their Address

To avoid confusion and make the rollout smoother, we introduced an online address search. By entering their street address, residents could see:

  • When their food scraps bin would be delivered

  • When collections would begin in their area

This tool helped people get the info they needed, fast.

We also worked with Auckland Council to ensure the landing page was accessible and user-friendly for everyone. From clear layouts to screen reader compatibility, accessibility was built in from the start, because making the service easy to use means making it easy for everyone to use.

Staying in the Loop

People could also sign up for updates. Whether they were waiting on a bin or curious about when collection would start, they could get notified directly.

Got a Pātai? Help Was Handy

If anything didn’t go to plan, residents were encouraged to get in touch with the council team. Whether it was a missed delivery or a question about eligibility, support was just a call or click away.

Straightforward and On Purpose

This service was built with a clear purpose: make it easy for Aucklanders to manage their kai para, with everything they need—nothing they don’t. The tools, instructions and updates were all designed to be useful, local, and simple to follow.
